Run 17: Experiment DS-17
Experiment DS-17 was conducted under stress conditions of oblique extension,
where the extension was oriented 30° sinistrally from the extensional
axis. The thickness of the silicone layer was 1.5 cm, and the sand layer
was 0.5 cm thick. The rate of the oblique extension was 1 cm/hour, and the
experiment lasted 8 hours and 45 minutes. The deformation along the central
section of the experiment box was approximately 45% of the total experimental
offset. The experiment demonstrates the initial en echelon orientation of
a phase where several small rifts break the sand layer concurrently. Please
note that during advanced stages of the experiment a rifted structure can
be seen in the upper right-hand side of the experiment box, which is attributed
to boundary deformation.
